Can I do vijaya ekadashi on February 17th instead of 18th since both my husband and myself are Smarthas only. I can not do on February 18th since I already accepted an important function for which I can not fast. So, I would like to observe the ekadashi vratham on Feb. 17th. Please reply to bmurthy62@gmail.com. Thanks.

No, this is not true. Same as Monday cannot be a Sunday nor can your birthday be any different; night cannot be day and so on, Ekadashi cannot be any other day. Fuller reply has been sent to Bhavani. Anyone wanting a copy should contact me at indianmaharaj[at]hotmail.com
First decide on the number of Ekadashi's you are going to observe fasting. If you break, you have to re-commence all over again.
Fasting begins with eating once on the 10th day. Staying hungry on the 11th day and again having only one meal on the 12th day. (As per Garud puran and Mahabharat) Any other form of fasting such as eating once on the day or allowing yourself to eat "Farari Food" such as Potatos and like are just gimmicks.
I thought bhavna and bhakti is of main improtance rather than how many times you eat and what you eat.You can find that written in all the religious literature as well.Of course fasting means no eating but same books who list fasting also say that you do not need to torture yourself for a fast and also there is flexibility in case of people with medical problems that require some eating. Also one should not get involved in eating non veg food obtained by killing nor should do things that hurt others.
So please please clarify, Ekadashi date 17th Feb or 18th Feb for following customs. i.e. not eating rice & prohibited food...
Please clarify Ekadashi date 17 or 18th Feb for fasting & not eating rice
You should observe it on February 18. This is recommended day for all family people.
as per calnder the thidi Ekasi is commenced from 17th at 07.06 night and it will continue till next i.e on 18th up to evening 6'O clock. So we have to do fast on 18th Sunday
For Smarthaas, Ekadesi is on 17th Feb as per our Panchangam. For Vaishnavites, Ekadesi is on 18th Feb. The reason according to me is that on 18th Feb, Ekadesi thithi is only available for a few minutes after Sunrise.
For vaishnavites, it is important that there should be Ekadesi at the time of Sunrise. So for them Ekadesi is on 18th Feb. Please remember that after a few hours from Sunrise on 17th Feb, there is Ekadesi for the whole day. Only keep in mind that you remember to break the Ekadesi fast after say half an hour from Sunrise .
To end any confusion,I fasted from afternoon of Feb 17th and will break my fast only after the evening sunset time 5:33 pm of 18th passes, with some water and juices. It is not adviseable to eat prasadam in heavy quantity at the time of breaking the fast. In fact only the next day one should resume normal eating habit, and the fast must be simply broken by liquids and fruits. The night of 17th must be spent in kirtan if possible.
