Today is Mattu Pongal – January 16, 2011

Mattu Pongal is the third day of Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu. Mattu or Mathu means cattle or bull and the day is also known as Pongal of the cattle. Mattu Pongal is today famous for the bull fight known Jallikettu or Manji Virattu. Mattu Pongal is a sort of thanksgiving to cow, which provides milk and organic manure or fertilizer, and bull, which draws the plough. The mind obtains nothing at anytime; even if it obtains enormous wealth, it does not have inner contentment and is like the bamboo basket which cannot contain the water poured into it. Mind is the cause from which external objects originate. Mind existing all the worlds exist. If that is attenuated the world becomes extinct. Therefore the mind has to be properly disciplined. Like trees growing in abundance on the mountain slopes, countless joys and sorrows arise from the mind. If the mind is attenuated through discernment, the sorrows also get effectively dispelled. Today in Hindu Calendar – January 16, 2011

Tithi in Hindu Calendar on January 16, 2011 – Today is Shukla Paksha Dwadasi – the 12th day of the waxing phase / light phase of moon in Hindu calendar and Panchang in all places. Dwadasi Tithi from 0900 hrs (09:00 AM)  on January 16 to 0830 hrs (8:30 AM) on next day. All time based on India Standard Time. Please note that before 9:00 AM it is Ekadasi or eleventh day. Note – As it is Ekadasi Tithi, when the sunrise takes place. Ekadasi fasting is observed by majority of Hindu communities today. Only those who follow smarta tradition observe it yesterday. Paush Shukla Paksha Dwadasi or 12th day of Poush month in calendars followed in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.  Note in some calendars followed in Maharashtra – the day is marked as Shukla Paksha Ekadasi as the tithi during sunrise is Ekadasi.
