Dedicated to Hindu God Vishnu, Ekadashi Vrat is observed on
the eleventh day of a fortnight in a Hindu lunar calendar. Ekadashi dates in
January 2013 – January 8 and January 22. Fasting from sunrise to next day
morning sunrise is generally observed by many Hindus. Some observe the fast
from the start time of Ekadasi Tithi and break the fast at the beginning of
Dwadasi Tithi.
The January 8, 2013 Ekadashi is known as Safala Ekadasi.
The January 22, 2013 Ekadasi is known as Putrada Ekadasi in most regions.

The preparation for Ekadashi fasting begins on the Dasami
day – the day before Ekadasi. On the Ekadasi day, devotees observe complete
fast. The day is meant for hearing religious discourses and performing pujas.
There are also devotees who do not observe total fast. They
avoid grains especially rice and consume fruits, nuts and milk.
The fasting comes to an end on the Dwadashi day with the
consuming of food cooked in one’s house.

The sunrise on 4th is at 7.14 Am and Ekadashi starts at 6.12 Am,then i wonder why u wrote that 'there is Dashmi tithi during sunrise on the day.'
Regards,
Harsh.
Harsh the time varies from region to region Sunrise is not at 7:14 AM. I do not know which region you belong to.
I got the correct reason when i did a little research. In almost all the regions of India,Ekadashi started prior to the Sunrise on 4th. But when the time difference is not 1.12 hour, then that Ekadashi is considered 'Impure' for fasting. And fast should be done on Dwaadashi.
I had to spend lot of time on the internet to find out this info. Most of the websites(including yours) is telling that the fast should be done on 5th but the reson what you all are giving is not correct because in almost all regions of India, sunrise time was later than the time when Ekadashi started.
Moreover, whenever Ekadashi continues over 2 days of period and Sunrise time of Dwaadashi is prior to the moment when Ekadashi is ending, we should do the fast on Dwaadashi(its called Maha Dwaadashi) as its considered more powerful and auspicious.
Thanks.
Harsh.
I am really confused about this year ekadesi vrudham...I live at York, United Kingdom...according to IST ekadesi starts around 7:30 am in the morning and ends at 9:30 am on 5th jan'12. so which time i must follow? which time i need to be awake and perform pooja? pls guide me...
Just follow anyone time which is convenient for you. What is important is devotion not how you perform or the time. Chant om namo narayana and do the fasting the best way you can.
Silly time calculation is for pandits and those that are obsessed with rituals.
Narayana is everywhere and everytime. Om Namo Narayana
Time and date is important, not for Pandits but also for devotees. If its not, then one should not wait for Ekadashi and do fast on any day of the month.
Yes time matters. Thats is the reason panjangam came and the virutha has come. I used to hear from my parents and grandpa as Ekadasi virutha and also Dwadasi virutha is a good one. I am following only Ekadasi virutha and dwadasi I take the gooseberry if it is available. Ekadasi virutha palan will get when you take the gooseberry on duwadasi. I usually follow the day starts and the day ends. I cannot calculate the time as it is given in the panjangam. So I usually be the viruatha from 00.01 AM to 11.59 PM. I do this way.
Don't take calculation of time as silly thing, if you do this, it will be a silly mistake. Ekadashi means 11 moon day of both waning and waxing Moon. Astrologically the Tithi may start anytime in 24 hours, but to determine the day for fast always take the Brahm Muhurta of the day of which Sunrise falls in Ekadashi. if you are away from India, you do not require the time when Ekadashi starts in India. Always start your fast about 1 to 1.5 hours before sunrise and you should remember that complete sunrise and Brahm Muhurta should fall in Moon tithi with reference to the place in which you are residing. for example the next Ekadashi is Shat Tila Ekadashi and the fast in India will begin from Brahm-Muhurta of 19-1-2012. In London too, Ekadashi fast should be began at Brahm Muhurta of 19-1-2012 despite of the fact that in London, astrologically Ekadashi started at 4.00 PM( UK Time) on 18-1-2012 and in India it has started at 9:30 PM IST on 18-1-2012, But Brahm Muhurta of both countries is falling in Ekadashi Tithi on 19-1-2012. So the fast Day is 19-1-2012, 1 to 1.5 hours before sunrise in both countries.
