Ekadashi December 2016 date – Monthly Fasting Dedicated to Hindu God Vishnu in December 2016




Ekadashi is a monthly fasting dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is observed on the 11th day of a lunar fortnight. Ekadasi December 2016 dates are December 10 and December 24.

December 10, 2016, Ekadasi is known as Mokshada Ekadasi and Gita Jayanti is observed on the day.

The December 24, 2016 Ekadasi is known as Saphala Ekadasi in most regions.

The preparation for Ekadashi fasting begins on the Dasami day – the day before Ekadasi. On the Ekadasi day, devotees observe complete fast. The day is meant for hearing religious discourses and performing pujas.

There are also devotees who do not observe total fast. They avoid grains especially rice and consume fruits, nuts and milk.

The fasting comes to an end on the Dwadashi day with the consuming of food cooked in one’s house.

The famous Vaikunta Ekadasi in South India especially observed in Tirumala, Bhadrachalam Sri Rama Temple, Srirangam and other Vishnu temples is on January 8, 2017.

The January 8, 2017 Ekadashi is known in Kerala as the SwargaVathil Ekadasi.

The day is known as Mukkoti Ekadaasi at Bhadarachalam Temple.
