Ekadashi is a monthly fasting dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is observed on the 11th day of a lunar fortnight. Ekadasi December 2012 dates are December 9 (December 10 in western parts of India) and December 24. The famous Vaikunta Ekadasi in Tirumala and Srirangam is on December 24. (Please note that Smarta Ekdasi is marked on December 23 - but fasting for devotees is on December 24. This is because there is Dasami tithi during the early morning period on December 23)
Note - Tirupati Temple is observing Vaikunta Ekadasi on December 23 and Dwadasi on December 24. Vaikunta Dwaram Darshanam is marked on early morning of December 24.
December 9 Ekadasi is known as Utpanna Ekadasi and it is from this Ekadasi most people begin the next cycle of Ekadasi Fasting. Uttpanna Ekadasi is marked on December 10 in calendars followed in Maharashtra and Gujarat. In all other regions it is marked on December 9.
December 24 Ekadasi is also known as Mokshada Ekadasi and Gita Jayanti is observed on the day.
