Ekadashi is a monthly fasting dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is observed on the 11th day of a lunar fortnight. Ekadasi December 2013 dates are December 13 and December 28 (in western parts of India Smarta Ekadasi is marked on December 28 and Bhagavat Ekadasi is marked on December 29 - Majority of people in Maharashtra and Gujarat will be fasting on December 29).
December 13, 2013, Ekadasi is known as Mokshada Ekadasi and Gita Jayanti is observed on the day.
December 28, 2013, Ekadasi is known as Safala Ekadasi.
The preparation for Ekadashi fasting begins on the Dasami day – the day before Ekadasi. On the Ekadasi day, devotees observe complete fast. The day is meant for hearing religious discourses and performing pujas.
There are also devotees who do not observe total fast. They avoid grains especially rice and consume fruits, nuts and milk.
The fasting comes to an end on the Dwadashi day with the consuming of food cooked in one’s house.
