Pradosham is a monthly fasting day dedicated to Hindu God Shiva. The day occurs twice during the Hindu lunar month. Pradosham dates in October 2012 – October 13 and October 27. Prayers are offered to Shiva and Goddess Parvati during the twilight period on the day.
Both the Pradosham in October 2012 falls on Saturday and therefore it is known as Shani Pradosh.

The Pradosham on October 24 is on Monday and therefore it is also known as Som Pradosham.
Pradosham as the name indicates is a period just before sunset and after sunset. Loosely the Pradosham period is between 1.5 hours before sunset and 1 hour after sunset.
Devotees fasting on the Pradosham day, break their fasting after the evening prayers.
