Amavasya is
the no moon day in a month in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar. The Amavasya
in October 2012 is of great significance as it marks the end of the Pitru
Paksha Shradh Period and is known as Mahalaya
Amavasya. Amavasya October 2012 date is October 15. The Amavasya
Time begins at 07:56 PM on October 14 and ends at 6:03 PM on October 15.
This Amavasya is particularly chosen for observing rituals
dedicated to departed souls. Anyone can perform Shradh to departed souls on the day. There is no need to look for dates etc and Shradh can be performed to any departed soul.
Traditional Durga Puja rituals also commence on the
day.
As per traditional North Indian calendar it is the Amavasya in Ashwin
month. In other regions it is the Bhadrapad Amavasi.
Bhadrapad month ends in traditional calendars followed in
Maharashtra, Gujarat , Andhra Pradesh and
Karnataka on the day.
Navratri festival commence from October 16, 2012.

Hi. I was wondering what date/time diwali should be celebrated in Northern America (United States). Also, should one celebrate Diwali based on Indias time or should we go by the time of the place we reside in. So for instance, should we do our pooja and celebration at the same time as someone in India or wait until the given time happens here. I hope you get what I am trying to say. :) Just need some clarity as to when to celebrate Deepawali here. Thank you so very much! :) I reside in Sacramento, CA and follow PST. Thanks once again.
