Amavasya, also known as Amavasi or Amavas, is the no moon day (some refer it as new moon day) in a month in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar. Amavasya April 2013 date is April 10. The Amavasya Time - begins at 2:19 PM on April 9, 2013 and ends at 2:24 PM on April 10. The Amavas on April 10 is known as Chaitra Amavasya in North India and in other regions it is the Phalgun Amavasya.
This Amavasi is also the last day in a Hindu Lunar year in calendars followed in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra,Goa and Karnataka. The day after this Amavasi is observed as Ugadi and Gudi Padwa in these regions.

This Amavasi also marks the end of the Vikram Samvat 2069 in calendars followed in North India . The next day marks the beginning of Vikram Samvat 2070. Kali Yuga 5115 also begins on April 11, 2013.
Amavasi is the darkest day in a traditional Hindu month and is considered both auspicious and inauspicious by different Hindu communities.
There are many Hindus who undertake a fast on Amavasi. Some devotees only take a single meal on the day.
Phalgun month ends in traditional calendar followed in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat on the day.

In April 2011, UK amavasya time is from 12:05 PM on April 2 to 2:32 PM on April 3.
I want to start Amavasya vrat from 3rd april 2011. please guide me correctly about the way to perform this vrat as i am completely ignorant but very keen on following this pooja.

The fasting is from sunrise to sunset. You can take a single meal on the day after sunset. Vegetarian food should be eaten. There are no special pujas but you can offer prayers to your personal deity.
