Importance of Shakambari Purnima in Paush Month

Shakambari Purnima is observed on the full moon day in the Paush month (December – January) as per traditional Hindu calendar. Shakambari Purnima 2017 date is January 12. It is believed that Goddess Shakumbari Devi appeared on this day on earth. Shakambari is an incarnation of Goddess Shakti.

She is believed to be the Goddess of Vegetables, Fruits and Green leaves. Legend says that Shakambari Devi appeared after a hundred year drought. All the plants had died and there was nothing to eat. Goddess Shakambari brought forth from her body fruits, flowers, vegetables and herbs to suffice the hunger of the people.

The day is also observed as Shakumbari Jayanti. In some temples the nine-day Shakambari Navratri concludes on the day.

Adi Shankara Thoughts – How To Remove Ignorance?

Outward ritual cannot destroy ignorance, because they are mutually contradictory. Knowledge attained through self realization alone destroys ignorance. Knowledge cannot spring up by any other means than inquiry. ‘Who am I?’ How was the universe born? Who is the maker? What is the material cause? This is the kind of inquiry one should do. When the mind is purified like a mirror, knowledge is revealed in it. Care should therefore be taken to purify the mind. Action cannot destroy ignorance, for it is not in conflict with ignorance. Knowledge alone destroys ignorance, as light destroy darkness. Just as a jar is all earth, so is also the body, all consciousness. The division, therefore, into Self and non-Self is made by the ignorant to no purpose. Adi Shankaracharya
