Amavasya is the no moon day (some refer it as new moon day) in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar. Amavasya January 2013 date is January 11. The Amavasya begins at 3:27 AM on January 11. The Amavasya ends around 1:22 AM on January 12, 2013. Amavasya Vrat is marked on January 11, 2013 - a single meal is taken while fasting on the day by some Hindu coommunities.

Shradh and Tarpan rituals are to be performed on the morning of January 11, 2013.

The fortnight that starts with Amavasi is the Shukla Paksha or the waxing phase of the moon.

January 11, 2013 Amavasya is the Paush Amavasya in calendars followed in North India.

In Calendars followed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa and Andhra Pradesh it is the Margashirsh Amavasya. Paush month begins in these calendars from the next day – January 24.

this is freaking confusing!! If you publish something kindly mention one date as per HINDU CALENDER, not as per the regions!

THE ALMANAC'S DIFFER - ONE MATHEMATICAL AND THE OTHER ROUGH OR MANUAL CALCULATION.SOME REGIONS/SECT OBSERVE 22ND AND SOME ON 23RD AS PER THEIR HERITAGE/CULTURE/FAMILY TRADITION-WHATEVER NAME ONE CAN GIVE. UNITY IN DIVERSITY IS THE SPECIALITY OF THE HINDU'S. FOR A LAYMAN IT MAY BE CONFUSING BUT IF ONE CONSULTS HIS/HER FAMILY PRIEST/PUROHIT/ASTROLOGER ONE IS GUIDED PROPERLY. FOR THAT ONE SHOULD MAINTAIN THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR FAMILY/FRIENDS/RELATIONS AND VILLAGE/TOWN HIS FAMILY GENERATION BEGAN. ONE MUST BE HAPPY TO HAVE SUCH A BLOG LIKE THIS.
