Pitru Paksha 2013 based on Hindu calendar – India Standard Time. Pitru Paksha 2013 begins on September 19 and ends on October 4. In Hinduism, Pitru Paksha is the rituals performed by relatives for the departed souls of dead ancestors, parents and relatives. Below are the Mahalaya Pitru Paksha 2013 dates. Tarpan and Shradh are performed on all Amavasi or no moon days. But the most important period to perform Shradh is the Pitru Paksha period during the Krishna Paksha fortnight in Ashwin month (September – October). In some regions this period is the Bhadrapad Krishna Paksha.

What is the vedic reason to avoid things like new purchases on these days ? For example, I am doing Shradha of my relatives on trutiya. i am not observing any shraddha. i was told about this belief by someone only today. he told me that i should avoid shifting to the house allotted by govt to me for staying, during this period. since i do not observe this ritual, can i shift? or is any particular day in this period when i can shift?

To the last anonymous...I think we are becoming too enchanted with ritualistic and tantric rules here. Every day is a good day ... so do your things and dont let it control your mind! I think doing shradh is materialistic and it depicts we are still bound to the body of the departed...such as feeding them, etc. It probably originated from Garudh purana which is full of rubbish...even pundits will tell you that! If you really care of the departed then perform moksha puja (once) and let everyone rest in peace.

To ppl who say this is nonsense. Its a simple logic a period in a year has been allocated to remember and think about your dear ones who have passed away.
During this time we as a whole community are thinking about the loved ones and would like to perform some rituals. There is nothing harm in it and I think where you are remember your loved deads you dont want to party around. If you question this then you should question father's day, mothers day, valentines day, christmas, diwali, navaratri and blah blah.. when you celebrate happy days why cant we remember the loved ones and have a somber day. just my thought... and mind you what are you giving to pundits are not making them millionaires... what you spend on diwali and christmas and thanksgiving is making corporates millionaires..

You can travel there is no problem. It is only applicable if you are performing all 15 day shradh.

@Bharati...during pitru paksha you can do shradh on October 15, 2012 for her. If her husband is alive then you can also opt for October 9, 2012. To know her tithi you should mention which calendar you follow.
@Rahul...September 30 is a normal date. It is not bad as you had already paid the money you can take the car. If you have fears of Shradh fortnight still then wait till October 16, 2012.
