Ganga Saptami 2014 Date

Ganga Saptami is a festival dedicated to River Ganga or Ganges. It is believed that Ganga appeared on to earth on the day. Ganga Saptami 2014 date is May 6. The day falls on the seventh day (saptami) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) in Vaisakha month as per traditional calendar Hindu calendar.

The celebration of Ganga Saptami is based on the evidence found in the Padma Purana and Narad Purana.

In Haridwar and other regions, Ganga Saptami is believed to be the day when Goddess Ganga descended from heaven onto Lord Shiva’s matted locks and then flowed onto the Himalayas.

Another legend has it that Ganga River violently entered into the ashram of Saint Jahnu and distributed his meditation. Overwhelmed by the anger Jahnu Rishi drank Ganga and released her through his ear. This day is marked as Ganga Saptami. Thus the day is also known as Jahnu Saptami.

It must be noted here that some Hindu communities believe that River Ganga appeared on earth on Akshaya Tritiya day and some people believe that the divine event took place during Ganga Dusshera in Jyeshta month. Ganga Dusshera is a week-long celebration.
