Sant Gadge Baba Jayanti



Sant Gadge Baba, also known as Sant Gadge Maharaj, was a Marathi saint and great social reformer who worked for the upliftment of villages in Maharashtra. Sant Gadge Baba Jayanti in 2015 as per Tithi is on February 17. It is the birth anniversary of this great saint who led by example – he traveled to villages in Maharashtra and started cleaning the gutters and roads. Through this he spread the message of cleanliness and values like service to humanity and compassion. As per Gregorian calendar, Sant Gadge Baba was born February 23, 1876.

The money that he received for cleaning villages was used to build educational institutions, poor homes, hospitals and shelters for animals.

Through his discourses he asked people to rise above rituals and superstitions and to identify the Supreme Truth through self realization. His mode of teaching was through devotional songs.

He continues to inspire villagers in Maharashtra through his life and teachings. A campaign started in his name to clean the waterways in villages in Maharashtra received wholehearted participation from all section of people and was an instant success.

The Amravati University was renamed as Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University for his services to the nation.

His birth tithi is observed on the Magh Krishna Paksha Trayodasi Tithi as per traditional Hindu calendar followed in Maharashtra.
