Thai Karthigai – Kirthigai festival in Tamil Month Thai



Karthigai, or Kirthigai Nakshatram, in the month Tamil month Thai is considered highly auspicious by Lord Muruga or Skanda devotees. Thai Karthigai 2011 date is February 11. The Nakshatram or birth star, Kirthigai, is associated with Lord Muruga or Subrahmanya and the Karthigai Nakshatram day is considered auspicious. Special pujas and fasting is observed on Thai Karthigai day by Skanda devotees.
On the day, many devotees observe a complete or partial fast and walk to Lord Muruga Temple with Kavadi on shoulders and Pal Kuddam (milk pots) on their heads.
Muruga temples are special decorated and traditional musical instruments and songs are played continuously.
Special abhishekam on Lord Muruga with milk, curd, panchamirtham, tender coconut water, sandalwood paste, honey, rose water and other auspicious items are performed on the day. There will be also procession of Lord Muruga through the temple streets in some areas.
