Jaya Ekadashi falls during the waxing phase of moon in Magh month (January – February) as per traditional Hindu lunar calendar. Jaya Ekadashi 2014 date is February 10. The corresponding period in Tamil calendar is the Thai Month. This fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu is also known as Bhishma Ekadashi and Bhoumi Ekadasi.
The greatness of Jaya Ekadashi was narrated to Yudhishtira by Lord Krishna and is found in the Padma Purana and the Bhavisyothara Purana.
The period when Jaya Ekadasi falls is believed to be the period when Bhishma the great grand father in the Mahabharata narrated the Vishnu Sahasranama to Pandavas. He also chose this period to leave his body and merge with the Supreme Being. Thus this Ekadasi is also known as Bhishma Ekadashi.
Fasting on Jaya Ekadashi is considered highly beneficial. Some staunch Vishnu devotees also do not sleep during the night. All the normal rules associated with Ekadashi fasting are followed.
