Safala Ekadashi, or Saphala Ekadasi, is observed during the waning phase or, Krishna Paksha, in November/December. Safala Ekadasi 2013 date is December 28. This Ekadasi is observed during the Krishna Paksha of Poush month as per North Indian calendars. The corresponding period in other regions is the Margashirsh month Krishna Paksha. It is believed that observing Saphala Ekadashi fasting will help in redemption of sins and also in attaining fame.
The importance of Safala Ekadashi was explained to Yudhishtira by Lord Krishna and is mentioned in the Brahmanda Purana.
A famous story associated with Safala Ekadasi narrates how a prince who used to oppose Lord Vishnu got cured from a serious ailment after observing Saphala Ekadasi fasting.
All the usual practices of Ekadasi upvaas are followed during Safala Ekadashi. Fasting is from sunrise to next day morning sunrise. Grains and rice are totally avoided by those observing fast.
