Margazhi Masam 2013 – 2014 – Markali Month in Tamil Calendar in 2013

Margazhi Masam, or Markali month, is the eighth month in a traditional Tamil calendar followed in Tamil Nadu. Margazhi Masam 2013 – 2014 begins on December 16, 2013 and ends on January 13, 2014. Markali Month is of immense spiritual importance and the greatness of the Margali can be gauged from the fact that Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita says “Among the twelve months, I am Margazhi.”

Margazhi month is noted for classical music concerts held by various organizations and communities. Young and old participate in these music concerts which has a massive following.

Chanting of the Tiruppavai of Andal is the most important event in the month. Tiruppavai consists of 30 verses and a verse is chanted on each day of Markali month.

Pavai Nombu is an important ritual observed by women in this month.
