How to do or perform Sankashti Chaturti Puja and Vrat? – Ganesh Sankashta Chaturthi Puja Procedure

Sankashti Vrat and Puja is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is observed on the fourth day after Purnima or full moon. Sankashti fasting is from morning to the sighting of the moon. Sankashti Puja is performed in the evening. Observing Sankashta Chaturthi is believed to help in removing all difficulties and obstacles in life.

For most people Sankashti Chaturti is a complete fast which is broken after sighting the moon and performing puja. There are also people who observe partial fast.

Sankashti Chaturti Morning

After early morning bath, prayers are offered to Lord Ganesha in the usual way by lighting a lamp or Aarti. Anyone of the prayers dedicated to Lord Ganesh is chanted. The fasting begins after puja.

Food that can be eaten by those observing Partial Fasting

Those people observing partial fast can eat Sabudana Khichadi or fruits or curd rice.

Sankashti Chaturthi Evening Puja

The puja is usually performed after sighting the moon. If moon is not sighted, the puja is performed as per the moonrise time given in the Panchang or calendar.

After sighting the moon, an idol or painting or photo of Lord Ganesh is decorated using flowers and Durva grass.

A lamp is lit.

A coconut, banana and flowers are offered to Lord Ganesh.

Usually a Prasad (Modak or any other sweet) is prepared and offered.

Aarati is performed. Other usual puja procedures like chanting mantras, lighting incense or agarbatis are done.

After the Puja the Prasad is distributed.

Some people opt for a more elaborate Shodashopchar puja – 16 steps.

Sankashti Chaturthi Evening Puja to Moon

Special pujas are offered to Chandra or moon god

The puja involves sprinkling water, sandalwood paste, flowers and consecrated rice in the direction of the moon.

Mantras Chanted During Sankashti Vrat Day

  • Sankashtnashana sthothra
  • Ganesha Ashtothara
  • Vakrathunda mahakaya or any of the popular mantras dedicated to Lord Ganesh is chanted.

Hello,

I did start my Vrat on last sankasti chathurthi. But, in the afternoon my friends came to my house and they asked me to go with them to their house. Since, I was not able to say "NO" I did go with them.

In their house, Since I had no other option I have to eat chicken. So I had chicken.

After that, I had bacon (pork) and beers also.

I feel guilty that I have committed a sin. Because, it was overall a messy thing. I started Vrat did not complete it properly and had Non-Vegetarian food and drinks too.

Hence, I would suggest you to give me some procedure to withdraw the Vrat in the middle if we are not able to continue. This would really helpful overcome my guilty feelings.

Thanks,
Karthik

Dear Karthik,

I can understand your feelings but what is past is past.
Going forward, just tell your friends that you are sorry but you don't want to accompany them.
At the end of the day, God is the best friend to have. Your other friends may not be with you in your bad times.

Dear Kartik,
Try to recite Ganesha Atharvashirsha on Sankashti Chaturthi.
Reciting Atharvashirsha on Sankashti is of great importance.

can i take coffee during vrat?

Anonymous said...

You can have tea/coffee (no special ingredients added to it, tea leaves, milk sugar and water, if you like you can add cardammom or ginger root to it), fruits, sabudana khichadi (make sure it is prepared in ghee and rock salt is used and not regular salt. I use sea salt [you can get this at any store, like Traders Joe, Sams Club, Jewel Osco])

Hope this helps.

Hi guys,

Ganesh likes beetle leaves garland. Just take 6 leaves and make as a graland and decorate either to his idol or the photo. Observe this on Tuesday is auspicious and offer raw milk with jageery in it. By accepting this, he melts like anything and our wishes will be fulfilled.

Thanks

I had a dream of a new Ganesh ji mandir somewhere. I went in to do puja before entering mandir there was shiv ji. I just about to pour water on shivlinge when few people stopped me and said there was no shivlinge and what was i doing. Although i tried to convince them there was!!!they told me its a Ganesh ji mandir...I could see the shivlinge in front of me...I was so hurt that people has stopped me from doing my puja...my heart was so heavy..I woke up with tears in my eyes..Now i have decided to perform the sankashti vrat for the first time...Does anybody know what this dream mean????

Anonymous said...

Sounds like you are being told to worship Sri Ganesha before/more than Shivji.
Anyway Shivji himself granted first place in all prayers to Ganshaji so it should be alright by Shivji when you now start to concentrate more on Ganeshaji. Perhaps it is Shivji's blessings itself that is telling you to do this.
Do Sankashti vrat, ask very humbly and devotedly from Ganeshaji for blessings and forgiveness of any unintentional mistakes earlier, or during vrat & puja.
I think you have been more of a Shivji devotee till now. Am I right?
Afterwards on a Monday or Pradosham day or monthly Shivratri worship Shivji and tell your deream silently.Say you are following this dream you think came from his guidance, and ask for further guidance, forgiveness if you misunderstood, ask for blessings in all cases.
Gods are our friends and well wishers as long as we tread the Dharma path - be joyful that you have got a message from them. Celebrate!
Be on the lookout for a new Ganesha temple nearby, or one being started now, and support it.
Jai Ganeshaji!
Jai Shivji!

Hey this is a great! This vratha is very effective. Let me share my experience: I was in Bangalore and was seeking PG seat. I did not get 1st year and after making Ganesh Chaturhti fasting I got the seat next year. I continued the fasting and I got the Job very next month after I graduated. Also I got allmost all my dreams... I must say myself stupid after stoping this fasting and now I am stuck without promotion from past 3.5 years(It use to happen once in 2 years always for me :( ).

Hi All,

I have been doing sankastahara chathurthi vratam for quite sometime now. However, i am unclear about the Vratam's procedure. As i browse through several sites and read the books, each of them have their own version of the Vratam. For ex: On most of the sites, including this one, i see a mention of breaking the fast after sighting the moon. But a few sites and 2 books mention that the fast should be continued through night and broken only on next day morning(This is as per the "skanda purana" story, that is read, during the pooja"). Now what is totally confusing here is which one should i follow. Kindly help me with the right one as i completely believe in this vrat . This is one of the greatest vrats known to mankind and the yeilds are great, if done correctly.

Regards
Venkat

I have a query. Last December I started Sankashti Vrat.Since I am working I could not go to temple in the morning. So I prayed to Lord Ganesha and I started my day with a cup of Masala tea.In the afternoon I had a cup of fruit juice. In between plain water if I am thirsty. In the evening I went to Lord Ganesha temple and went around 108 times around Lord Ganesha, did archana with doorva grass or Arugampul in tamil and then chanted Sankashtnashana sthothra. At night after puja had a full set of meal(rice). Kindly advise me if what I am doing is correct before next Chatuthi. This is the first time I am fasting so I really appreciate if you can advise me on this so that I can strictly follow the fast from coming chaturthi onwards.

Hi. What if Im from Croatia? and I wanna fast on ekadashi vrat(Lord Vishnu), trayodashi vrat(Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati), purnima vrat(Goddess) and Sankashti Chaturti(Ganesh)... So would be too much for my organism and body and mind? But I think that would be very beneficial..And if it that way is ok to remove neg. karma and to fullfill desires and good luck, and to clean sins..to complete fast on this days and after sunset eat one meal...

If that is too much then I was thinking to choose Trayodashi Vrat..Pradosh fasting... To fullfil desires and to remove neg. karma and sins through observing fastings on auspicious days.

Im from Croatia, and I think that I dont have all those products, foods for offering to shivlinga or to offering to picture of god....I have little shivlinga, or ishtaling I think so..So Im bathing it every day..Im planning to start observing pradosh vrats, so I want to do it correctly, so Im asking you people to help me how to do it correctly?

@Rajni...You can do evening puja. There is no problem with performing puja before moonrise.

You can do any number of vrat. 12, 16 it is for you to decide.

You should take water and eat fruits.

Most important is devotion not the hardness of fast.

Hello! I observed some people are asking if they can do vrat when they are pregnant. YOu are NOT supposed to fast during pregnancy. It is not right. You can just pray and continue after the baby is born. If you are feeding the baby also, you are not supposed to fast. Please take the advice from your elders or any priest from the temple.

Lakshmi said...

If you saw Ganesha by mistake, you can do the puja again, and read the story of Samnthakopakhyanam, which is the story of Sri Krishna being blamed for no fault of his due to his seeing he moon in the milk pot. He takes a lot of trouble to prove his innocence. When He is clear of His reputation, people understand the reason and pray to Him that because He is God, He was able to prove his innocence. How are common people able to do that? So, the compassionate Lord gives the varnam that if they read about His story, and put he katha ask hats on their head after putting some on The Lord Ganesha, they will not have any troubles even if by mistake they see he Moon. Please look for the story.

Moon represents the mind.Hence the deeper meaning to this Vratam is to calm the mind and acquire chittashuddhi. There is no need to have a transaction with the divine. When the mind is cal. Automatically we find solutions to our problems

I am doing this vrat from last 6 yrs, all was going well untill on 1 vrat i forgot & ate non-veg. i was so shamed that i begged punishment for the same from ganesh-ji. but instead of that they blessed me with a wonderful gift & that was after that yrs for continously 3yrs without any break( ladies problem) i completed & enjoyed all my vrat .
But that was not the end after 3yrs,bcoz of proudness that i am blessed & god is mine i got a punishment that i was not able to perform jan-month 1st vrat, but any which way since their was 2 vrath on that month so i performed the 2nd one.

MY query is that"Will ganesh-ji again bless me OR not ".
