Usually during a Chandra Grahan, a fast (Upvaas) is observed by certain communities in Hindu religion. The fast begins about 9 hours before the beginning of Chandra Grahan.
People also take a bath in cold water and chant mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu or Shiva like the Ashtakshara Mantra or Mrityunjaya Mantra. This is done whenever Surya and Chandra are under the influence of Rahu. Pregnant women chant the Santana Gopala Mantra.

Hey don't worry when the Grahan is not visible you don't need to take precautions. In India, when the Grahan is not visible the panchangs and temples ignore it. Same rule is applicable in all places where it is not visible.

The grahan for a particular region begins from the time in that region. For India it is from 11:53 PM. You don't need to stay indoors the whole day.

WE have fixed wedding of our daughter in Delhi on Dec 10th 2011 eve 7 pm onwards. Now we came to know about the eclipse. Do we need to make changes in the ritual time. We are in dilemma. Pl guide us. Thanks.
Marriages should not be held during the period. If you are residing in India or places in the path of eclipse.
December 11 is a good date. December 9 is also a good date.

Traditional Hindus do not eat during eclipse. They keep a fast.
After the eclipse is over most temples have cleansing pujas. Auspicious events are held only after this period.
If you live a region where eclipse is not given importance then you can go ahead with the function. I do not know which region you are from.

There is no muhurat on December 10 in India. It is also not good to perform auspicious ceremony on Grahan day.
If you are forced to do on the day you can go ahead and do it. Offer prayers to Ganesh and Shiva.
You can perform the ceremony on December 9 or December 11.

We are having Mata ka Jagran on 10 Dec. 2011 from 6.00PM till 9.00PM dinner and from 10.00 PM till 7.00AM Jagran, can it be done.
No worship should be performed during the period. It is also a period of fasting. So you cannot perform jagran during the period.

Dear pregnant ladies living abroad. The only precautions you need to take during an eclipse is to ensure your hubby is wearing a rubber. With 7 billion people already crowding the planet, the last thing we need is more idiots who think precautions need to be taken during a lunar eclipse. just look at the moon as it crosses the earth's shadow, thank galileo, kepler and newton for bringing us out of the dark ages and most importantly make sure your kids choose the science stream.

@Hari Priya....the eclipse in England is during the afternoon. It is not visible for most period. No you don't need to take any precautions.

@ Houston...the grahan is slightly visible during morning hours at 06:46 on December 10. You don't need to worry about it or take any precautions.

The Grahan is visible in Egypt from 4:57 PM to 6:18 PM on December 10, 2011. You don't need to take any major precaution. You can sleep and do your normal routine.

We live in Pune and my wife is Pregnant and in the 8th month currently. Since you have mentioned that Pregnant ladies need not fast, could you kindly guide us on what can she eat during the Eclipse- I mean is it ok to eat home cooked food or packed and sealed food options like biscuits and cake. After the grahan she is planning to take a bath and eat home cooked food. Should we consider the end of grahan as 9.48 PM or 11 PM as some sites are mentioning that the prenumbra period gets over only at 11PM.

In Hindu tradition importance is given to Grahan Sparsh kal and Grahan Moksha kal...Grahan Moksha Kal is at 9:48 PM.
For pregnant woman it is a normal day and they should normal things.
