Kedarnath Temple Closing Date in 2009

Kedarnath Temple located in Rudraprayag District of Uttarakhand in India remains closed for six months during the winter period. In 2009, Kedarnath Temple will close on October 19. The date for closure of the Kedarnath shrine was decided on Dussehra day (Vijayadasami day).

Kedarnath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is one of the shrines part of the Chardham yatra to the Himalayas in Uttarakhand in India. The shrine usually opens in April/May and closes in October/November.

Kedarnath Temple is one among the twelve Jyotirlinga temples. Legend has it that the Pandavas after the 18-day Great Kurukshetra War in the Mahabharata felt guilty of having killed their relatives and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for salvation here.

Adi Shankaracharya is supposed to have worshipped at Kedarnath Temple and fixed the method of puja.
