KedarnathTemple located in Rudraprayag District of Uttarakhand in India remains closed for six months during the winter period. In 2009, KedarnathTemple will close on October 19. The date for closure of the Kedarnath shrine was decided on Dussehra day (Vijayadasami day).

KedarnathTemple is one among the twelve Jyotirlinga temples. Legend has it that the Pandavas after the 18-day Great Kurukshetra War in the Mahabharata felt guilty of having killed their relatives and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for salvation here.
Adi Shankaracharya is supposed to have worshipped at KedarnathTemple and fixed the method of puja.
