There is a popular belief that the moon, or Chandra, is closest to earth during the Ashwin Purnima period. The rays of the moon are believed to have curative properties and it is believed that spending time in the moonlit night on the day will help in curing several diseases.
The day is observed as Sharad Purnima in many regions.
