Bhishma Panchak Vrat – Bheeshma Panchaka Vrata

Bhishma Panchaka Vrata is observed for five days during the waxing phase of moon (Shukla Paksha) of Kartik month starting from the Ekadasi day. Bhishma Panchak Vrat 2013 date is November 13 and ends on November 17. Bheeshma Panchakam Vrat was first observed Bhishma of Mahabharata after hearing about it from Lord Krishna.

Bhishma Panchaka Vrata is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is performed for attaining Moksha and for removing effect of sins committed. It is also believed that observing this Vrata will help in gaining good health. Some people observe it for the health of children.

Legend has it that Bhishma, the great grandfather in Mahabharata, performed this Vrat before deciding to leave the human body and merge with the Supreme Being.

In some regions people also perform Bhishma Tarpan on the final day of the Vrat.

A unique ritual during the Vrata is making offering in 5 numbers – five fruits, five flowers etc.

The greatness of this Vrat is mentioned in Padma Purana. The information on rituals and offerings performed during the Vrat is found in Garuda Purana.
