Bodhan Ritual During Durga Puja

Bodhan Ritual during Durga Puja is the process of infusing life into the Murti (idol) of Goddess Durga worshipped during Durga Puja. Bodhan Ritual is usually performed on the seventh day (Saptami) early morning after Ashwin Amavasya. In 2024, the date is October 10.

  • In some places it is performed on the sixth day (Shasti) after Amavasya.
  • But those people observing 15-day Durga Puja perform it on the navami before Amavasya.
The Pran or life of the Goddess is infused into the Murti on the day. The life is symbolically brought from a nearby river. The medium used to carry the Pran of Goddess is a banana plant. This plantain tree used for worship is known as Kola Bou. The Banana Tree is draped in yellow or in white sari with red border.
