The world famous Sabarimala Temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa in Kerala will open in the evening on September 7, 2011 for special Onam 2011 pujas and rituals. The shrine will remain open for four days during the Onam period and thousands of Ayyappa devotees visit the shrine during the brief period to celebrate their Onam with Lord Ayyappa. A major highlight during the period is the Onasadya (Onam Feast) prepared for Ayyappa, which is shared by the Lord and devotees.
The Onasadya will be offered to Ayyappa on all the four days.
Sahasrakalasa ritual will be performed on Thiruvonam day on September 9. On the same day, Udayasthamana pooja and Padi puja (pooja on the holy 18 steps) also will be held.
The temple will close on September 11, 2011 evening.
It must be noted that the Sabarimala Temple remains closed for the major part of a year and is only open throughout from mid-November to mid-January. The temple also opens for four days on the first of every Malayalam month and during special occasions like Onam and Vishu.
