There is No Instant Knowledge and Instant Enlightenment – Swami Rama

People often come to me (Swami Rama) for instant knowledge, instant Samadhi or instant enlightenment. They say, ‘I do not want to do anything. Please, Swamiji, give me ashirvada (blessing) or shaktipat initiation.’

Let me assure you that samadhi is not something that dawns all of a sudden. There is nothing like instant samadhi or instant enlightenment. Many of you think that a guru comes and blesses you and you are in samadhi. This never happens.

Many people would like to be enlightened in a second’s time without having to do any preparation. If someone has the power to awaken the dormant power of shakti, the primal force of kundalini, how are you going to handle it if you are not prepared?

In the path of sadhana, preparation is very necessary. Preparation does not mean making any physical effort. Preparation means becoming aware of another level of consciousness.

The greatest power in the world is the divine power of grace. This happens when you are prepared, when you have done your duties properly, and you have completed all the preliminaries. Grace comes and fills the gap you find in human life…That grace comes when you use all your human efforts.

Approaching a saint or enlightened being is positive for the devotee. They have the thoughts that the person they are approaching has accomplished a lot of work in the religious, spiritual and phillsophical area more than the devotee. The enlightened being is put on an imaginary pedestal by the devotee and for the devotee approaching that being is the like coming near to a soulful source. During and after meeting the being, the devotee feels energy pulse through the body and has a moment of exhilaration and the mind and body feel alert and stimulated. For one who has neither the time nor the inclination for religion this is a fantastic contact with someone who is held as special by the devotee and through such an encounter the devotee carries away the idea that they have accomplished a task to refresh themselves and make themselves feel better and later more motivated in regard to spiritual duties.
