It must be noted that in traditional Hindu calendar followed in North India, Mangala Gowri Puja begins two weeks earlier compared to the calendars followed in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Mangala Gowri Puja is dedicated to Goddess Gowri – another name of Goddess Parvati.
Since it is observed on Tuesday in the Shravana month, it is known as Shravan Maas Mangala Gouri Puja.
Special pujas dedicated to Goddess Parvati are performed on the day and women dress up like a traditional married woman with all bangles, flowers and mangalsutra – symbolically indicating to Goddess Gowri that they want to be like this on all days. It is believed that Goddess Parvati blesses women with material prosperity, health and long life.
The method of Mangala Gowri Puja and mantras used in the pujas vary from region to region. There are no food restrictions but usually only vegetarian food is prepared on the day.
Married women observe Mangala Gowri Puja in the first five years of their marriage.
