Mangala Gowri Vrata is observed by women for the long life of their husbands and for a happy and prosperous married life. It must be noted that in traditional Hindu calendar followed in North India, Mangala Gowri Puja begins two weeks earlier compared to the calendars followed in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra .
Mangala Gowri Puja 2012 dates in North India are – July 10, July 17, July 24 and July 31.
Mangala Gowri Puja is dedicated to Goddess Gowri – another name of Goddess Parvati.
Since it is observed on Tuesday in the Shravana month, it is known as Shravan Maas Mangala Gouri Puja.
Special pujas dedicated to Goddess Parvati are performed on the day and women dress up like a traditional married woman with all bangles, flowers and mangalsutra – symbolically indicating to Goddess Gowri that they want to be like this on all days. It is believed that Goddess Parvati blesses women with material prosperity, health and long life.
The method of Mangala Gowri Puja and mantras used in the pujas vary from region to region. There are no food restrictions but usually only vegetarian food is prepared on the day.
Married women observe Mangala Gowri Puja in the first five years of their marriage.
It must be noted that Shravan month is one of the holiest months in a traditional Hindu calendar and is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva in North India .

Hi, i just wanted to know how many diyas of thambittu should be made while performing gowri pooja? some peoplae say we need to make 16 diyas for aarthi and some say that we need to make 1 diya in the first year and that diye should be increased every year. i.e, 5 diyas at the end of 5th year. which one is correct?
Iam doing this mangala gowri pooja for the past 3 years. My elders said that we have to light odd counts of diya like (3,5,7,9 etc.).But depending upon the number of diyas, you have to prepare subhamangala items to god gowri.(like the combination of betel leaves, supari, bangles, kumkum, turmeric, kajal, blouse piece etc.)These and all are one combination for one diya. I hope you will understand.
