Sri Veda Vyasa Jayanthi is the birth anniversary of Sage Vyasa, the author of the Mahabharata and the Puranas. In 2014, the date of Veda Vyasa Jayanti in Vaishaka month is May 12. Veda Vyasa Jayanti is observed by certain Hindu communities on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) of Vaishaka month. This particular Veda Vyasa Jayanti is more popular in
South India, especially with some communities in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
It must be noted that Veda Vyasa Jayanti is observed during several dates in a year. This is because it is believed that Sri Veda Vyasa appeared several times to spread Dharma. The dates also differ from region to region and community to community.
Veda Vyasa is the editor of the Hindu scriptures – he has compiled and edited the vast volume of Hindu scriptures. And the vast repertoire of scriptures in Hinduism is primarily due to his efforts.
(This is an answer to a query to one of our readers, Harish Chandra, who was puzzled about Veda Vyasa Jayanti on Vaishaka Trayodashi.)
