Vat Savitri Vrat – Vat Puja 2010

Vat Savitri Vrat, or Vat Puja, is an important fasting observed by Hindu married women in North India. In 2010, the date of Vat Savitri Vrat is June 12 (Vat Savitri Amavasi Vrat). Those observing Vat Savitri Vrat on Purnima the date is June 25, 2010. Vat Savitri Vrat is based on Savitri-Satyavan legend in the Mahabharata. The Vat Puja is observed either during Amavasi (No moon) in the Hindu month of Jyestha or during Purnima (Full moon) in the month of Jyeshtha as per traditional Hindu calendar followed in North India.

In strict sense, Vat Puja fasting is for three days. It begins on the Trayodashi day (13th day of a lunar fortnight) and ends on Amavasi or Purnima – the fast is for three nights and ends on the fourth day. Prayers and pujas are dedicated to Vat Vriksha (Banyan Tree) and Savitri.

Most people now fast only on the main ritual day that is on the Amavas or the Poornima day.
