Swami Sukhabodhananda Thoughts

At the end of one of my programmes, a lady danced for three hours in sheer celebration. Then she came and sat next to me and told me how happy she was. As she was drinking coffee, the beverage spilt on her beautiful saree. Immediately, she screamed, saying her joy from the three-hour dance was gone.

Looking at this incident, I learnt that three hours of happiness was invalidated by a sorrow lasting for a few seconds. If our mind can work like this, the reverse is also possible. The three hours of sorrow can be invalidated by a few seconds of joy.

Capricious behaviour can led to disturbing outbursts. Linking the spilling of coffee to a negative outcome is about how the person has learnt of this from other people's reactions in previous incidents. If the person had learnt by the coffee spilling it could be cleaned up and it was not a disaster and she was still safe and sound at the end of it then she may have not felt that is was bad.

Dancing for so long is exercise but it may have made the person excitable which is not desirable. Having felt down after the coffee spilt means that she needs more therapy rather than dancing, or drinking some coffee. Coffee would have heightened the emotions further so that if the person had drunk all the coffee and then another mishap had befallen, the person would have had a greater sense of loss of pleasure than with the coffee being spilt in the first place.
