Cheti Chand is the New Year of the Sindhi Community and is observed on the first day of the Sindhi Chet month (March – April). In 2013, the date of Cheti Chand is April 12. The corresponding month in traditional Hindu calendar is Chaitra. The day is believed to be the birthday of the Lord Varuna, the God of Water. Symbolically, water – the vital essence is worshipped. Varun Dev is also believed to have incarnated as Sai Uderolal or Jhulelal to protect Sindhis.
Cheti Chand falls on the new moon day in the month of Chet. There is also a popular belief that Varun Dev appeared as Uderolal on the first day of Chet month to save Sindhis from the tyranny of a ruler who wanted to destroy the Sindhi culture and Hinduism. In popular Sindhi legend, Uderolal protected Hindus of Sindh from persecution at the hands of the 10th century tyrant Mirkshah.
Thus, Cheti Chand also marks the birthday of the community's most venerated religious figure Ishtadeva Uderolal Jhulelal.
On Cheti Chand, aarti is performed for Jhoolelal Sain, the Sea God of the Sindhis, and Guru Nanak Dev.
