Srisailam Lord Shiva Temple Shivratri Festival – Mahashivaratri Brahamotsavams



One of the most important festivals held at the Lord Shiva temple in Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh is the Mahashivaratri Brahamotsavams or the Mahasivaratri festival. The most important event during the festival is the celestial marriage ceremony of Lord Shiva with Bhramramba Devi (Goddess Parvati) on the Shivaratri day. Shivratri date is February 24, 2017.

The presiding deities of the Srisailam Temple are Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy and Goddess Bhramaramba Devi. Lord Shiva is known as Mallikarjuna Swamy here and the temple is one of the twelve Jyothirlingas. Bhramaramba Devi is one of the eighteen Mahasakthis and is an incarnation of Goddess Shakti. It is believed that the idols worshipped here are self-manifested.

The Shivratri festival attracts thousands of devotees and the important ceremonies and rituals that are held during the period are Ankurarpana, Dhwajarohana, Vahana Sevas to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, Lingodhbhavakala Maharudrabhishekam to Lord Shiva, Pagalankarana, Kalyanothsavam, Radhothsavam and Dhwajavarohana.
