Amavas or Amavasi in February 2009

Amavasi, also known as Amavasya or Ammavasi, is the no moon day in a traditional lunar month in a Hindu calendar. Amavas is the darkest day in the Hindu month and some Hindus only take a single meal on the day. It is also the last day in a month in calendars followed in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Amavasi date is on February 24, 2009. The previous day (February 23) is Mahashivaratri.

This Amavas is also known as Darsha Amavasya.

The Amavasi day is considered apt for doing Tarpan and Shradh for dead parents and other relatives.
