There is lot of fear among many Hindus regarding Surya Grahan (Solar Eclipse) and Pregnancy. Most people want to know about precautions to be taken during Surya Grahanam. The only precaution that you should take is that you should never look at the Sun directly during the Grahan. As a clear cut solution, ancient seers in Hinduism recommend pregnant women remain indoors during Grahan. The mantra chanted during the period is the Santana Gopala Mantra.
Update: The next Surya Grahan is on June 1, 2011. But this is not visible in India and major parts of the world.
Astrological View Point
Now for those of you believe in astrology, there is a ‘punya kala’ when the Surya Grahan is visible. And people observe fasting during this period. If the Grahan is not visible in the particular region, there is no ‘punya kala’ and there are no restrictions.
There is no restriction in moving around if there is no Surya Grahan in your region.
Ayurvedic View Point
Some traditions in Hindu religion ask pregnant women to sit or lie down on a mat containing Darbha grass or Kusha Grass. It is also advised to keep some Kusha Grass with the pregnant woman.
Fasting during Grahan
Now there are several Hindu communities that fast (Upvaas) during Surya Grahan. A pregnant woman should take the advice of her doctor before fasting. If you are so particular about fasting, you can fast just during the Surya Grahan period and avoid a complete fast.
The Use of Metal or Sharp Objects
There is a popular belief that pregnant women should not use sharp metal objects like knife, pins etc during the Grahan period. In simple terms they should not cut anything during the period or should not wear pins etc. Some people suggest that it will be hard to stop the blood flow if there is a cut on the body during the period. But this has no proper scientific backing.
Mantra During Surya Grahan
The mantra that is chanted during Surya Grahan by pregnant women is the Santana Gopala Mantra.

The effect of grahan will be there in all parts partially.So take care of your wife by lying in a bed or carpet and not to do any worki during Grahan time i.e 2:00 PM to 4:35 PM IST.
Its better to chant mantra: **OM NAMAH SHIVAYA** during grahan time.

Although science has developed so much, no one could refuse still we have lot more left to discover. Still we dont know much beyond earth we live. We are still discovering whether water is available in Mars. Still science has not replaced those days saints.. practices came from those days

there is no harmful effect of radiagtions untill you directly see into the SUN.and that's to it can happen as low radiation are more effective than usual at that time.otherwise there is no way it cdan harm u.

The eclipse is visible for few minutes during the morning hours on January 15 only in South Italy. I can give you only Naples time now because you have not mentioned your exact location.
You don't need to worry as the eclipse is only for a very very short period and will be hardly visible.

This is to say something about time.
Time is Kaala in Sanskrit. It is the all powerful and decides the creation and destruction of anything and everything. The same Kaala can also be seen as Yaama and then Yama (the God of Death - the God of Final Judgement). Yama is the Dharma-Raaja - the most rightful and deliverer of Justice.
Kaali is the Female form of Time.
Only Shiva (the husband of Kaali) can control Time and therefore, Shiva is also known as Kaalantaka (the Killer of Time / Death). In Yoga, the yogi strives to become Shiva so that he or she takes control over time and can become immortal. This is the basic nature of Achievement or Vision required by Man as per the Vedic Saints. (Whatever religion one follows!! - Religion is opium !! Therefore be a Yogi - Yuj means to Join and Yogi joins with the Shiva to attain Immortality and Bliss)
Even Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva are Kaalas.
Record of Time (Kaala) is called Kaala-antara where the word Cal-endar came.
The Earths movement around the Sun was found to be around 360 days when the seasons repeated again.
Therefore this became the basic unit of measuring a year. Since this was circular (cyclic as the seasons repeated), each day was called a dina and was equivalent to a degree. This is how a circle is made up of 360 degrees.
It was further observed that primarily there were Six seasons and therefore, 360 / 6 which was equal to 60 was taken to be the primary unit of time.
Thus a day comprised of 60 Naadikaas and each Naadika comprised of 60 ViNaadikaas.
The Cycle (Chakra) of 6 seasons were divided further to 12 as it was easier to do so while considering the phases of the Moon which was of 15 days of Krishna (Black) paksham (phase) and 15 days of Shukla (White) paksham.
As the cycle of Krishna and Shukra repeated again, it was again cyclic to the effect of 30 days. Hence the total year was divided into 30 dinams (degrees) each thereby making 12 months.
{ Krishna means that which attracts within / to itself. Krishna is black because all light & its colors are attracted and gulped in by anything black so that it is black to our eyes.

Now since each month had two pakshaas of Moon, in all, there were 24 pakshaas of the Moon.
Interpolating this value of 24 into a day, the day was divided into 24 horaas (hours as we call today). Each Hora was devoted to One Planet in the Solar System. It was counted that there were 7 (Seven) Grahaas (that which grabs/holds/attracts another).
Ancient Vedic astrology/astronomy mentions about 7 Taaraa-Grahaas and 2 Chaayaa-Grahaas (Shadowy Planets).
{Needless to mention that the word Planet doesn't suit Vedic Astrological Nomenclature because, the Greek word from which planet was derived, meant 'wanderer' as the trajectory of the planet couldn't be decided by even Greek Astronomers then!!}
Attributing the 7 Grahaas to each Hora of a day (comprising of 24 Horaas), the next Graha in the order from Saturn to Moon is taken in the order of the time taken by each for one revolution (around Earth in the Astrological Chart), { the order being Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon - Moon is also a Graha as it attracts another }.
It is also told that the Name of the day is determined by the Lord of the Hora at the time of Sun-rise. ie between (0600 hrs to 0700 hrs every day)
This is how we get the names of the Week as Sunday of Sun, Monday of Moon, Tuesday of Mars, Wednesday of Mercury, Thursday of Jupiter, Friday of Venus and Saturday of Saturn.
What is given in an astrological chart is a representation of TIME at a particular moment. Actually, the Astrological Chart is a 24 hour clock for all those living in Earth which the fastest moving Needle called the Lagna or the Ascendant.
As there are two shadow planets (Viz. Raahu and Ketu) also represented in the Chart for the convenience of calculating the Grahanams - Eclipses of the Sun and the Moon, and the relative motion can be represented in the opposite direction of the normal movement of the other Grahaas thereby causing Eclipses whenever they meet the Sun or the Moon, they are identified with the Sarpaas or the Snakes and therefore called teh Kundalini's - representing the Power of each Person with the power of the two hidden snakes called the Kundalini Shakti also known in Yoga as the Chakraas of Union with God. (Snakes are said to get United in the form of the Kundalini Chakras).
This is how the Janam Kundali is formed.
Therefore, every one should know that what is represented in the Janma-Kundali are not the various planets moving around the Earth (even though they are very much so,) they are in fact different Needles of a 24 hour clock having at least 10 Needles.
(Interestingly in modern day we use just three needles and that too we manage with a 12 hour clock !!)

This refers to Su on the valuable discussion 'something on time'. However, a few terms seems to have been in error.
For example, 'Shiva is also known as Kaalantaka' NOT because 'Shiva (the husband of Kaali) can control Time' but only because, Shiva happened to 'kill' kaala (Yama). In the context of 'Time' it may be more appropriate to refer Shiva as 'Mahakaala' in relation to the discussion of Time.
Secondly, 'Kaali' is another name for 'Shakti'. 'Maha Vishnu', the all pervading energy is the 'product' of 'Shakti' (Power) and 'Kaala' (Time). Remember the basic equation in Physiscs that 'energy is the product of time and power'. Incidentally, this explains the relationship between the trinity (and not just 'kaalas' as mentioned by su)as 'Maha Vishnu' manifests as the 'karanodaka' (causal), garbhodaka (Brahman) and ksheerodaga (part of the trinity) in its expansion during creation.

Stories in the Puraanas are written to explain a scientific phenomenon or truth. Therefore, there cannot be a past tense to truth as Truth is Sanaatanam (eternal). Shiva's killing of Time (Kaala) is a constant phenomenon (ie. is in the present tense as well. - As well as in future as it was in the past).
Shivam means Mangalam or peace. Only Peace can Kill Time and it continues to do so. Shiva fell at the feet of the dancing Bhadra-Kaali (destructive Time) only to bring Peace on to Her.
Energy and Power are synonymous. Energy is the product of Matter and Velocity (Time & Direction) as per Einstein's theory of relativity E=mcc.
The product of Shiva and Shakti is Pranava sound which is AUM and this is only Gana-pati - the lord of all (ganaas). (Gana = that which can be identified - Not to mention that, That which cannot be identified is the Lord Himself).
Vishnu means space - all prevading. There is no existence without space and hence Vishnu is regarded as the Preserver among the Trinities. Shiva means Peace and therefore everything ends in Shiva. Brahma is the creator and everything Originates with Brahma (word comes from brihat = Big ie. becoming identifiable). Creation need not necessarily be material, it could be an idea as well. For eg. an idea is born when it becomes big in the mind. Then it takes a form when it needs space. Finally it dissappears after having fulfilled its duties and it goes into State of Peace (Moksha).
The Hindu story of creation starts with Brahma. From Brahma's mind came the Maha-tattwa (the Great(Maha) idea(Tattwam) - or the Great Principle). From the Mahatattwam (blue-print) came Matter (identifiable object).
The Puraanaas are written to preserve Scientific Knowledge and not for stories. If they were written just as science text books, how many would have carried it with them?. (How many of us remember what we learnt about quantum mechanics or physics in our schools or even during our Post Graduation? But we surely remember all these wonderful Puraanic stories !!)

While the ‘spirit’ behind what is being written is admirable, there are still some clarification required and that is attempted below.
Su sounds right that “The Puraanaas are written to preserve Scientific Knowledge” and hence they are stories with ‘truth’ as their basis. Hence Stories ‘described’ in the Puraanas are written to explain a scientific phenomenon or truth.
Shiva and Vishnu are both ‘conceptualisation’ of the ‘God’ which is beyond all concepts. As such a concept can not be ‘defined’, seers tried to explain ‘it’ through qualities. Hence ‘shiva(m)’ means mangalam among other things. Shiva is ‘half shakti’ or Shakti is ‘included’ in Shiva, the ‘pranavam’ itself and hence no product of Shiva and Shakti.
Energy and Power are not synonymous but ‘inclusive’ of each other but in different ways. Vishnu is the ‘all pervading’, ‘all encompassing’ and ’all supporting’ energy, which is the source, essence and destination of everything that ‘manifest’. Matter is nothing but energy constrained in ‘time’ and ’space’, parts or ‘amsha’ of ‘tat’. Constraints can be in space or time, or in both realms, giving rise to the 86 million+ life forms (apart from the 330 million demigods/goddesses) described in scriptures. The fact that Vishnu is ‘Shakti’ as well (because of its inclusion as energy) becomes clear from the ‘Mohini’ avatar as it becomes the consort of Shiva leading to the birth of ‘Shasta’. Ganapati is Vishnu (see sahasranama sthrotham).
Bramha as the creator is the first ‘created’ being and is ‘formed’ from Vishnu. In fact all the trinities are ‘formed’ out of Vishnu, without which no creation (See Bhagvad Gita for details) occurred and born ‘out’ of Brahma. Not Brahma’s mind, but Brahma itself is the cosmic mind, in which and from which everything emanates.
Shiva is the ‘nirakara’, ‘nirguna’, ‘nirvikara’, ‘niramaya’ conceptualisation of ‘tat’ glorified in ‘Rigveda’ while Vishnu is the ‘sakara’, ‘savikara’, ‘saguna’ conceptualisation of the same and hence is the ‘purusha’ and ‘prakriti’, glorified in Samaveda.
What one understands is just a drop in the ocean of knowledge and depends on the evolution of consciousness or level of enlightenment.

It is not ‘Mahatatwa’ but ‘mahat’ tatwa (see ‘sankhya’ texts) and is nothing but Vishnu, whose cosmic dream is said to be the cause of all creation. A ‘sleeping’ child lying on a ‘banyan leaf’ and floating on the ‘causal’ ocean symbolises this (kaaranodakashayi Vishnu). The whole process of creation is sometimes referred to as a play (lila) of that cosmic child. Brahma was born out of this causal energy. Out of Brahma, Vishnu took ‘birth’ again as ‘Narayana’ to protect all life forms during the life span of Brahma and Shiva as Sankara (and all ‘Rudra’ forms) to annihilate all ‘created’ realms after each Brahma’s life time.
It is interesting to note the Christian belief that one can not reach the father other than through the son. Further, Jesus was claimed to have said to his close disciples that the father and son are the same. These thoughts fit well with the Hindu scriptures (for example, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad ch.2 v.2)too in essence though.
Einstein’s ‘empirical’ equation as quoted was NOT to define energy but to ‘determine’ the (maximum) amount of energy that could be released from a mass of ‘m’. Velocity of light in that equation is chosen as a CONSTANT and does not ‘represent’ ‘time’ or ‘direction’ as Su seems to believe. The equation only confirms Hindu belief that all matter formed from energy in the first place. If that equation were to be taken as Su indicates, then 'mind' does not have any energy as it does not have any matter in it, nor does God!
Knowledge is structured in consciousness. The more one moves towards the highest levels of consciousness, the more one understands.

I was told that one should ask pregnant women to remain indoors. They should not use any shrap objects, no eating or drinking, no reading or straining eyes, during the eclipse. Just relax for a few hours listen to some bhajans.or watch tv or just talk indoors. I intend to follow it - you might say i am old fashioned but I dont care.
