Shri Panchami

Shri Panchami is an auspicious day dedicated to Goddess Saraswathi, the Hindu Goddess of Learning, and is observed on the fifth day in the Shukla Paksha of Magh month (January – February) as per traditional Hindu calendar. In 2015, the date of Shri Panchami is January 24. Shri Panchami is also known as Vasant Panchami or Basant Panchami or Saraswati Puja. It is observed as the birthday of Goddess Saraswati in Nepal and north and eastern parts of India.

A major highlight on the day is the elaborate Saraswati Puja and initiation of children into the world of alphabets or letters. Yellow color, which represents spiritual knowledge, is given importance on Shri Panchami. An idol or image of Goddess Saraswati is dressed in yellow colored clothes and worshipped. Hindus also wear yellow garments on the day.

It must be noted here that Shri Panchami is also observed on the fifth day of the waxing phase of moon in Chaitra month.
