Putrada Ekadasi January 2025

The Ekadasi by the name of Putrada Ekadashi is observed during the waxing phase of the moon in the month of July/August and also December/January. In 2025, the date of Putrada Ekadasi in Paush month (December - January) is January 10.

Putrada Ekadasi is also observed during the waxing phase of the moon in Shravan month (July – August) in some parts of North India, Gujarat, Orissa, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and it is on August 15, 2024. The corresponding name of Ekadasi observed in North India during the Shukla Paksha in Shravan month is the Pavitra Ekadasi.




Ekadasi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is observed on the 11th day of waning and waxing phase of moon in traditional Hindu calendar. It is believed that by fasting on Putrada Ekadasi one is relieved of all the sins committed. The greatness of this Ekadasi was explained to Yudhishtira by Lord Krishna and is found in the Bhavishyottara Purana.

There is a popular belief that married couples without children will be blessed with children if they observe Putrada Ekadasi.

This Ekadasi is especially observed by married couples for getting healthy children. After early morning bath on the day, the murti of Srihari Vishnu should be bathed using Curd, Milk, and Water. Prayers should be then performed using roli, chandan, dhoop and deep. Arati should be performed using Karpoor deep.

It is also highly meritorious to feed poor children and old people on the day.

Most Vishnu devotees fast on the day and some devotees do not sleep. Those people observing partial fasting abstain from food made of rice.

The popular belief is that those observing Putrada Ekadasi Vrat will get redemption from sins and will help in attaining Moksha. A popular legend mentioned in the Puranas indicates that a King was able to beget a son by observing Putrada Ekadashi.

All the normal rules associated with Ekadasi fasting is observed during Putrada.

Putrada Ekadasi Mantra

ॐ जगन्नाथाय नमः॥

This mantra should be chanted 108 times using a Tulsi Mala.

Food Prepared on Putrada Ekadashi

The bhog or prasad or naivedya on the day should be prepared using Makhana (मखाने) - foxnut. Usually kheer or sweet of it is made and offered to Vishnu. This is then distributed among family members, friends, neighbors and relatives.
