Kanuma in 2009 – Kanuma Festival in Andhra Pradesh

Kanuma festival, also known as Pasuvula Panduga, is observed on the third day of the Sankranti festival in Andhra Pradesh. It is an important festival of Telugu people and is observed in the Telugu month of Pushya. Legend has it that Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan hill to protect the people of Gokulam on this day. In 2009, the date of Kanuma Festival is January 15. The festival is dedicated to cows, bulls and other animals that are part of rural economy in Andhra Pradesh.

It must be noted here that the lifting of Govardhan hill is observed as Govardhan Puja in North India after Diwali.

Cattle are bathed and decorated on the day. They are taken to the temples and pujas performed. The festival is quite similar to the Mattu Pongal observed in neighboring Tamil Nadu.

Maukkanuma, a day of feasting and merrymaking, is observed the day after Kanuma festival.
