Ganesh Jayanthi, or Shri Ganesha Jayanti, is an important festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha in the Magha Month in especially in Maharashtra . It falls on the fourth day of Shukla Paksha of Magh Month as per traditional Marathi Calendar. It is also known as Til kund Chaturthi, or Winter Vinayaka Chaturthi. In 2013, the date of Ganesh Jayanti is February 13.
An image of Ganesha is made from Turmeric powder or Sindhoor powder and it is worshipped. The idol is immersed in water on the fourth day. Food prepared from Til (sesame) is consumed on the day.
The Ganesh Jayanti festival is observed as the birthday of Lord Ganesh in many parts of Maharashtra . Special prayers are held at all Ganesha Temples.
The festival is also known as Til kund chouth, or Tilkunda Chaturthi.
Ganesh Jayanti should not be confused with the famous Vinayaka Chaturthi festival held in August/September.
