Ganga Sagar Mela, also known as Gangasagar Fair or Ganga Snan, is the annual gathering of Hindu pilgrims during Makar Sankranti at Sagar Island India and around the world arrive at Sagar Island to take a dip in sacred waters of Ganga River before she merges in the Bay of Bengal . The Gangasagar Mela is usually a three day affair and starts a couple of days before the actual Ganga Snan date.
Hindu pilgrims in large numbers take holy dip at the auspicious time on Makar Sankranti day and offer prayers to Lord Surya (sun god). The holy dip is believed to wash the sins away and lead to the attainment of Moksha.
After Ganga Snan, pilgrims visit the Kapilmuni Temple
Pilgrims start to arrive in the first week of January and the venue attracts maximum pilgrims on the Makar Sankranti day.
Accommodation for pilgrims is provided on the transit camps set up on Sagar Island

You can sleep with the pilgrims in makeshift huts. Perfectly comfortable. Buy some straw and sleep on the sand. I am taking someone there so look out for an older tall white guy and an English woman. We will be staying in one of these huts.
