Why Ayyappa Devotees Wear Black Dress to Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple?

Majority of the pilgrims visiting the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple wear black dress – black dhoti, trousers, shirt or T-shirt. Others opt for the saffron colored dress. The dress code is also part of the strict and rigorous preparations that a devotee undergoes before climbing the 18-steps to the Sabarimala Ayyappa shrine.

The usual custom is to observe strict austerities and self control for forty-one days preceding the visit to the temple. But nowadays most pilgrims do not follow all the rules associated with Sabarimala Vratham.

During the Sabarimala Vratham, the mind is made to withdraw from the worldly objects and is slowly directed towards Ayyappa. The aim is to reach Tat Tvam Asi – That Thou Art – everything is that Supreme Being.

The black clothes symbolically indicate a mind withdrawn from all materialist objects. The black cloth suggests the Ayyappa devotee is dead to the world of perceptions, emotions and thoughts and he is immersed in thought of Ayyappa.

Hi Lahari,

Ayyappan virutham (1 mandalam) is 41 days. This is Kerala style. For south India (Tamil Nadu), 1 mandalam = 48 days.

As you know all the ayyappa devotees should wear Tulsi mala and other mala.
many people may not know how it is manufactured, where it is manufactured
,actually its manufactured by a small community which is slowly moving to other business since this is not profitable for them
due to lot of middle men in the supply the price is hiked multiple times and the actual manufacturer getting nothing .
since ayyappa gave me an education, i wanna help my community back and ayyappa devotees as well. so I am directly supplying all the items needed for deeksha thru devotees
Not thru any shops...

do not follow or belive others. do what your mind says is true. Fasting, thinking only of the lord ayyappa, clean mind and body is the best way. Dont do any show business during these times. Remain humble and that is what the lord needs. He listens if you pray seriously and with deep devotion. I am telling this with experience.
A humble Ayyappa devotee.

Hi Bala,

Well there is no restriction of going to gym or suana but then one has to be extremely careful that mala does not break during the vritham time. I would strongly urge you to go for long walks instead of gym & suana if its possible. I am also very happy to know you are following the rules very strictly. Every devotee who follows the rules & regulations strictly is blessed by Lord Ayyappa.

which is the weekly day of ayyappa swami?like lord shiv's day is monday...

solariser said...

which day of the week belongs to swami ayyappa?like moday is of lord shiva

Vishal Sathyan said...

@ Solariser: Saturday is considered that day, because Lord Ayyappa is represented by Saturn. I never visited Sabarimala (I have plans to visit this year), but I'm a great devotee of Lord Ayyappa.

@ Anonymous: Don't be upset. Lord Ayyappa will definitely curse him.
