Amavasi, also known as Amavasya or Amavas, is the no moon day in a month in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar. It is the darkest day in the month and is considered both auspicious and inauspicious by different Hindu communities. The day is considered apt for doing Tarpan and Shradh for dead parents and other relatives. Amavasi date is on November 27, 2008.
There are many Hindus who undertake a fast on Amavasi. Some devotees only take a single meal on the day.
Amavasi also marks the end of a month in Gujarati and Marathi calendar. Also in calendars followed in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Kartik month ends on November 27, 2008 in these calendars and Margashirsh month begins from the next day.
