Kartik Maas (Month) is the eighth lunar Hindu month in the traditional calendar followed by Hindus in North India. This calendar is followed mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh. Kartik month is also considered to be one of the holiest months in Hindu calendar and millions of devotees take a holy bath in Ganga and other holy rivers. In 2008, Kartik month begins on October 15 and ends on November 14. Diwali, Lakshmi Puja and Bhai Dooj are some of the important festivals in Kartik mahina.
The greatness of the Kartik month is mentioned in the Uttar Khanda of Padma Puran. The month is considered holy because it is believed that Lord Vishnu took Matsya Avatar in this month to restore the Vedas. Taking bath (Snan) in holy rivers in this month is considered highly auspicious. The full moon day in Kartik month is observed as Dev Diwali in remembrance of Lord Shiva killing demon Tripura.
In the calendars followed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Kartik Month begins on October 29. Kartik, also known as Kartak, is the first month in Gujarati Calendar and the Gujarati New Year (Anakut day) is celebrated on this day.

Hello, there ... i really like the post in this blog ... and i really want to know what the difference between hindu in Bali (Indonesia) and in India ... :) *sorry for my bad english*
Hello - thanks for this info - I was recently wondering why my Gujarti calendar dates were always different to the dates of other Hindu calendars! Especially for Kartik month!! And now I understand why!
Also... I would like to add that this month is special for the devotees of Lord Krishna also, the reason is:
Lord Krishna, as a child, allowed Mata Yasoda to tie Him with ropes to a wooden grinding mortar in this month - because He was being naughty! You may ask, how can anyone tie up the Supreme Lord Krishna? But by this pastime, He fully tasted the essence of her parental love. He also thereby revealed to the world the willingness to subject Himself to the dominance of the devotee - so the Lord can only be bound by the LOVE of His devotee!
By doing this Lord Krishna got the name Damodara. This is also why Kartik month is also famous by the name of "Damodara month". So during this holy month the Lord Krishna is easily attracted by any puja/seva/service that is done to Him.
During Kartik month, devotees daily sing the prayer called "Sri Damodarastaka" (which is found in the Padma-purana) spoken by Sri Satyavrata Muni during a conversation with Sri Narada, Saunaka and other sages. This prayer is actually capable of attracting Sri Damodara-Krsna.
