Amavasya – Amavasi in October 2008

Amavasi, also known as Amavas, is the new moon day or no moon day in a month in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar. The Amavasi in October 2008 is important as it marks the end of Vikram Smavat year 2064 – it is the last day in the traditional Gujarati Calendar. Amavasi date is on October 28, 2008. The day is also the Diwali day in North India.

Amavasi is considered to be the darkest day in a lunar month. Several important ceremonies dedicated to dead ancestors like Tarpan and Shraddh are performed on the day by several communities.
