Shravan Purnima

Sawan Purnima, or Shravan Poornima, is the full moon day in the month of Shravan (July – August). The day is of great significance in Hindu religion many auspicious rituals and festivals are held on this day. The Amarnath Yatra comes to a culmination on this day. Raksha Bhandhan is also celebrated on Shravana Purnima day. In 2014, date of Shravan Purnima is August 10.

Shravan Purnima is known as Narali Purnima in Maharashtra. It is known as Akshar Purnima in Gujarat. The month long pujas dedicated to Lord Shiva in North India comes to an end on the Shravana Purnima day. Jhulan Yatra festival comes to an end on the day.

Sravana Purnima is an important auspicious day in Telugu calendar and special pujas are performed on the day. Avani Avitam in Kerala and Tamil Nadu falls on the day. Also Rig and Yajur Upakarma rituals are performed in Karnataka on the day.

Some devotees fast on the Purnima day. The fasting is based on the usual Poornima day Vrat.
