There are numerous fears and doubts regarding Ashadam or Ashada Masam (June - July) especially for Telugu and Kannada speaking people. In 2013, Ashada Month begins on July 9 and ends on August 6. Some married couples want to know, is it good for the wife to stay with husband in the Ashad month? The inauspicious tag attached to Ashada month is due to the fact that the Dakshinayana Punnjaykalam or Karak Sankranti begins in this month. The sun changes its courses in this month and next six months is the night time of Devas (gods), which ends with Makar Sankranti.
Ashadha in Karnataka and Ashadamu in Andhra Pradesh is the fourth month in the Kannada and Telugu Calendar. People avoid undertaking auspicious events this month. Some of the reasons have scientific backing but many are based on rumors and fears.
There is a tradition among certain communities in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in which newly married couple does not stay together in Ashadamasam. Usually, the wife stays away from her husband and returns to her home. In Tamil Nadu, the tradition is followed in Aadi Masam. This is a sort of precaution, if the wife becomes pregnant in Ashada, she will give birth in March (Chaitra). This is the hottest period in India and it is not suitable for the health of the mother and child. Today, with modern medical facilities this particular custom is not strictly followed.
There are also many who believe that the daughter-in-law and the mother-in-law should not stay together in this month. There is no astrological significance to this and there is nothing to fear. And astrology should not be the guide in deciding on crucial matters relating to relationships. An individual should know what is best for him or her.
Note - Beliefs associated with Ashada Masam have no scriptural backing - they are not mentioned in Hindu holy texts. All these beliefs are manmade and is only followed by a minority in Hindu community. Majority of Hindu communities ignore such beliefs.

Yes, This is a sort of precaution, if the wife becomes pregnant in Ashada, she will give birth in March (Chaitra) and the new baby will become handicaped. Thats the reason in Andhrapradesh we follow this. But, newly couples can follow the precautions to avoid the pregnancy and so can stay together.

You said if kid is born in March it will become handicapped. Are you suggesting all kids born in March are handicapped?
these masa...were done in olden days...i believe that it is scientifically correct as baby born in march(in case pregnancy takes place in Ashaada month),...as in that time it was difficult to manage child and mother health because of hot and humid enviornment.....
In this modern era...it does not have significancy..
Please any one explian what is the significancy in not starting good things...like fixing marriage?
I'm getting married on this July 1st early morning.. and I'm planning to have a seperate family (near to office). please suggest if I can shift to new house in Aashadam. i.e., after 12th July 2010.

Hi I actually got into love marriage in last may 2010. I dont know may we follow this ashadam masa. People surrounding us saying about that we two have to be away from eachother. Our elders are not supportive enough yet. What we have to do?
can we shift the room now?
Hello Friends,,
Auspisious works such as house warming,Marriage talks, or any Business deals are avoided during Ashada..
These were followed from ancient days in Considreation with the Environmet....
We all know for a fact out Saint , Rhishis, sages, were also Environmentlist ..
We all know during Ashada , weather is too WINDY...
Olden days any auspious envnts used to take place in a Open space ....
Blowing wind would lit the lamps off , or would bring the dust along its blow and may spoli the food prepared in ope space..
Yagna , Yagas and Homas would be dificult with the blowing wind hence our Learned Rhishi , sages restricted any such events during these 30 days... Or in sanskrit (Ashada was Nishidha) for auspicious events( Deva Karya)...
People slowly followed these and adapted to all good cause such as Mariage talks, Bussiness deals, and so on....
Signifigant environment reason is the only cause for Ashada to be considered with all belief of bad omen for good events...
All the Customs we follow were made with analysis and in considreation of the people region and environmental conditions... Our ancestors have just followed it may or may not knowing the reason behind them..
This could be the due to over Respect toward elders or the fear of Not to Question the elders or a learned scholars...
EVERY HINDU CUSTOMS HAS ITS OWN REASON JUST NEXT TO IT...SIT BACK AND ANALYSE. We would know its reasoning...
Thanks for useful information about Ashada masam
HI
ONE OF MY FRIEND IS CARRYING AND SHE IS FEARED THAT HER DUE DATE IS IN THE MONTH OF AASHADAM
WILL THE BABY HAVE GOOD FUTURE IF THE BABY TAKES BIRTH IN THAT MONTH.
Hi, I concieved in the month of ashada.. Is it really harmful?
You might need to deliver the baby in Mar/Apr and it is hard for baby to survive the initial days in that hot summer.
If you have a A/c at home, then you are safe.
There is nothing harmful if you conceive the month of Ashada. This was when there was no good medical facility that giving birth during summer was a problem.
Can you please anyone tell me why mother in law and sun in law should not cross the same dwara in ashada masam? i am newly married and this is my 1st ashada masam, is there any particular reason for this
@Kalyani...these are silly beliefs spread by ignorant people. don't belief such things.
@Praveen thank you very much but behind every belief there is a scientific reason so i am searching for that but i didn't get anyway thanks.
please do not try to find scientific reason for all beliefs some of our beliefs are so silly - a little commonsense will solve the issue. tell me what kind of scientific explanation can you give for two individuals should not cross the same dwara in ashada masam.
by the way am not praveen...but praveena.
hi
we are planning to shift our house in july first week..is it ok to do that?
Dont follow all these
In olden days, mother in law tortures daughter in law. So, if daughter in law goes to mothers home they will be happy for some days. Thats why our old people followed this.
I dont want to send my wife, some say its not safe for my mother if she is in home in ashadam, but its not written any where? We are trying to get pregnent from May if she gets +ve they i wont send as risk of miscarriage in travel.it depend on you how you like? - Gopi (AP-Hyderabad)
