Varalakshmi Pooja or Vrata is an important puja dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi – the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity. In 2012, the date of Varalakshmi Puja is July 27. This Lakshmi Puja is observed by married women in the Indian states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and by some communities in Kerala and Goa .
The importance or significance of Varalakshmi Vrata was narrated by Lord Shiva to Goddess Parvati. It is mentioned in the Skanda Purana that once Goddess Parvati wanted to know about a ‘Vrata’ that is beneficial to all women and Lord Shiva narrated the glory of Varalakshmi Vrata.
It is believed that taking part in the puja or even observing the Varalakshmi Pooja is highly auspicious.

Hey the picture in the blog belongs to mine. Where did u get that?
I guess i got it from some image bank. If you are concerned i can remove it.
all my life we have been tying a red thread on our wrist for Laxmi pooja, i read that we should use yellow? Which is right?
Also, why do we put a comb and mirror in the pot?
the color of the thread varies from region to region. so you don't need to worry about it. The comb and mirror too is followed only in some regions. In your community this might be skipped.
can the varalakshmi pooja be conducted on 13th aug. that is the previous friday as it might be difficult to do it on 20th august. pls answer.

@ Ranjani the ideal option would be to opt for the friday after 20th.
But this is not possible then you can opt observe it during a Friday in Navratri.
This blog has written about such issues here -
