Thirunallar Shani Temple in Karaikal

One of the most popular Shani Temples in India is located at Thirunallar near Karaikal a part of Union Territory Pondicherry. There is a misconception that this Shani Shrine, or Saturn temple, is located in Tamil Nadu. The greatness of the Thirunallur temple is attributed to the unique idol of Lord Shani as he stands blessing the devotee – abhayahastham. This is a very rare phenomenon and therefore thousands of devotees who believe they are badly affected by Shani visit the shrine to get his blessings.

Shani, or Sani, is one among the navagrahas and is believed to create problems in the life of people, especially by those people who keep close track of their horoscope and believe in astrology.

The exact name of the Shani Temple at Thirunallar is Sri Dharbaraneswara Swamy Devasthanam and it is also referred as Saneeswara Bhagavan Temple. The main temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. But the Shani Shrine has become more popular than the main temple primarily due to belief of devotees that by praying at the shrine will make Shani happy and thereby all the miseries and hardship are removed.

Legend has it that Lord Nala mentioned in the Epics and Puranas was relieved of all sufferings after praying at this shrine.

Believed to have been built in the 7th century, the temple also has small shrines dedicated to other gods including Lord Ganesha.

Thirunallaru Shani Temple is located about 5 km west of Karaikal in Pondicherry. The temple lies on the Karaikal – Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal – Kumbakonam road. There are direct buses from Chennai to Thirunallar. The easiest route is from Chennai to Thirunallar is via Tindivanam, Pondicherry, Chidambaram, Tranquebar, Karaikal.

Nearest Railway Station to Thirunallar Shani Temple is the Mayiladuthurai Railway Station.

It must be noted here that Karaikal is part of Pondicherry Union Territory but is surrounded by Tamil Nadu on three sides and on the east by Bay of Bengal.

Greetings! I have just returned from Thirunallur. I did NOT visit the main busy temple which is such a popular place of pilgrimage. But, I drove round the back of the temple and came across another large temple, all on its own. No crowds, no people, just a single priest, rather abandoned. Do you know the name of this temple? I am a photographer and would appreciate any information that you can share with me. Many thanks Dominic

Seems like you are talking about the main temple at Tirunallar which is the Darbaranyeswarar Temple.

Thank you so much for you very prompt reply. http://wikimapia.org/#lat=10.9257067&lon=79.7835517&z=17&l=0&m=a&v=2

I have added a link on wikimapia which I think shows the temple I refer to. I am curious as to why this temple is near abandoned. Can you enlighten me?

abhilash said...

I am not sure what you mean by abandoned. At what time did you visit the temple? Most temples are only crowded during the puja time.

Thirunallar Shani Temple attracts people from around the world as it is only the Shani Temple in which Lord Shani blesses the devotees. So the unusual large crowd or the temple is always busy.

Pondicherry (Puducherry the new name) is around 320 km from Bangalore. Karaikal is around 120 km south of Pondicherry. It will take around 12 hours by car to reach Karaikal.

I used to donate by mail from the USA to the Thirunallar Shani Temple and they would preform puju and Homa, and send me back the Prassadum. However, a few years back they stopped sending me anything even though I keep donating. I have sent several cashiers checks with donations and my requests for confirmation of the Puja and Homa, but I never get any response- so I dont know if the performances are being done or if the checks are possibly stolen etc.

Any idea how I can contact the Temple administration by email or phone to see what is happening to my donations?

Thirunallar is just five kms away from Karaikal. You can reach Karaikal from Bangalore by bus. KPN Travels has regular Bus service from Bangalore. The Volvo AC costs Rs 550 per seat from bangalore. There are good hotels at Karaikal. You can stay at Karaikal and visit Thirunallar. Regular bus services are there from Karaikal to Thirunallar.

This is the only place in the earth where Shani Bhagawan is in Blessing mode. It is said it is scientifically prooved that the rays of saturn falls directly to this place. One can get rid of all his problems by getting the blessings of Lord Shani.

what are the timings at the shani temple? Does a simple Darshan do or any Pooja needs to be done? I dont speak Tamil and dont wont to be taken for a ride by touts. what would be the approx cost of hotel double room in Thirunallar or Karaikal? We are 4 of us plan to arrive from Bangalore in the morning and leave by evening

Anonymous said...

Exact timings I do not know. But it should be between morning 6.30 to 12.30 and again evening 4.30 to 8.30 on week days. On Saturdays , it is virtually open the whole day.No tout will take you for a ride. Pl stay at Karaikal where AC rooms are available in the range of Rs 600 -800. From there it is only 5 kms and plenty of buses are available. you can follow this simple way there:
1. Ask any one where is Nala Kolam - Pond of Nal.Here you have to take bath.Street vendors will give you small sachet of til oil, shampoo etc. You can use the oil and take bath in the Nal Kolam. There after you have to leave the used old clothes there only.
2. Near the Kolam, you find a Ganapathi Temple. Crack a coconut in fornt of the temple, worship Ganapathi and then move towards Shani Bhagawan Temple, which is at walkable distance from the Ganapathi Temple.
3. You can lit lamps- made up of black clothes immersed in til oil. This you can do at the entrance of the Shani Temple. Thereafter you can go inside and do archane. Counters are ther to guide you.

You need not worry about touts.

Dear Chenganoor citizen,
You can reach Trichy-Thanjavur-Mayladuthurai.
Upto trichy you can take a direct train and From Trichy to Myladuthurai also you will find few local trains. Then you can go by bus which will take 1 hour to Thirunallar.

In thirunallar you will find mini halls to do your refreshment.

Visit & get Sani Baghawan's blessings as soon as possible, since the sani transformation is nearing within few days and it will be very effective.

Thanks,

Kumar

There is one train from Ernakulam to Nagore. Get down at Nagapattinam and take a bus to Thirunallar. If you dont get a direct bus from Nagapattinam to Thirunallar go to Karaikal and from there to Thirunallar. Nagapattinam is one station prior to Nagore. It is better to get down at Nagapattinam because of railway station being nearer to bus stand and frequent buses. Nagore railway station is rather secluded.

Hi All,

I visited this temple last saturday, 10th march 2012. There is direct KSRTC ( Karnataka) Volvo ( Airavath) bus from Bangalore ( Shanthinagar bus station) to the temple. This bus is a regular Bangalore Chidambaram bus but on Saturadys the trip is extended till thrunallar via karaikal. Bus starts from shantinagar bus station at 9.45 pm ( usually take 15 mins exra time before it actually starts from there ) reaches Thrunallar by 8.15 am and bus is stopped right infront of temple. Stayed at a nominal place called Siva Residency and cost was Rs500 per day. Took bath at Nala Pond, had darshan and ccame out side by 12.15 pm.
Then we vacated the room and had lunch at karaikal ( Hotel Vandana). Lunch is better in karaikal as there are not many good hotels in Thirunallar. Post Lunch travelled to chidambaram, visited beautiful Nataraja temple and by 9.45 pm boarded same bus back to Bangalore . It reached Majestic by 7.30 am.

Rent was Rs 500, initially told 700 but came down to 500 as it was for few hrs. Took bath at nala pond had Darshan and came out of temple by 12.15 pm. For lunch karaikal is suggested as good hotels are not there in thrunallar. We had it in hotel vandana next to karaikal bus stop. In thirunallar temple it is better to go for special darshan which is Rs 100 because for normal darshan we can see god only from a distance. As I was not satisfied i came back for special darshan where god can be seen closely. Afternoon after lunch we went to chidambaram. It takes 1.45 mins for normal pondicherry state bus, visited beautiful nataraja temple and after dinner in chidambaram boarded same bus at 9.45 pm back to Bangalore. Bus reaches to majestic by 7.30 am.

Karaikal is the closest town(5kms away). You have direct buses from Bangalore / chennai.
Train - Mayilthadurai is the closest station. Catch a bus to Karaikal - 1.5hrs.
In Karaikal you have all budget lodges incl the pondy tourism dept run hotel. You get good Tamil south indian food and the messes are the best to taste local food.
Higher end hotel is Neemrana at tranquebar (10kms).
YOu get bikes for rent at Karaikal. The beach has a good hotel and you can spend some time here.

Once when Lord Hanuman was helping Rama build the bridge to Lanka, Hanuman was afflicted with Sani Dasa. Hence Lord Sani had to cling to him. Fearing that Lord Shiva would be angry (since Lord Hanuman is a manifestation of Shiva), Sani approached Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in that order. Since they all said that Sani has to abide by his duties, there was no other go than to afflict Lord Hanuman. He went to Dhanushkodi where Hanuman was helping in the Bridge work. Shani requested Hanuman to release a small part of his body so that he could cling to him. Hanuman prostrated before Sani and told him that his head was the only place where Sani can sit. Hence Sani sat on the head of Hanuman. Hanuman continue to carry stones for the bridge and Sani was made to bear the weight and abrasions caused by the stones. After a few hours, Sani was so distressed that he left Hanuman. Hanuman caught hold of Sani and told him not only to leave Him alone but also all His devotees. Hence it is said that when afflicted by Sani, take recourse in Lord Hanuman....
