Gauri Vrat 2013 date in Gujarat

Gauri Vrat is an important ritual performed by unmarried women and young girls in the month of Ashadha (July – August). In 2013, the dates of Gauri Vrata is from July 18 to July 22. The Vrata is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. (Gauri is another name of Goddess Parvathi). It is mainly observed by unmarried women in Gujarat.

Gauri Vrata is observed for five days and begins on the eleventh day in the waxing phase of the moon in the month of Ashada and ends on the Purnima day. A unique ritual of growing corn shoots is observed during the five days.

Legend has it that Goddess Parvati had performed this Vrat to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Therefore there is a widespread belief that those who observe Gauri Vrata will get an ideal husband.

During Gauri Vrata, unmarried girls observe a partial fast and perform pujas dedicated to Goddess Parvati. During the five days salt is strictly avoided. Food eaten is mainly made of wheat flour, ghee and milk. Different types of fruits are also consumed.

Those observing Gauri Vrata grow corn in a small pot. Sun and the tender corn shoots are worshipped on all day along with Goddess Parvati.

There are numerous Vrata or fasting dedicated to Goddess Parvati including the Swarna Gowri Vrata in Karnataka, Teej Vrat, Hartalika Teej and Karwa Chauth in North India and Jaya Parvati Vrat in Gujarat.

you basically cannot eat anything with salt in it. which leaves fruits, milk, dahi, and most nuts (unsalted - obviously). And one "meal" is considered some type of fruit or something in addition with saltless bhakri. However, on the 5th and final day, Jagaran, you do not get this single meal, instead you fast all day surviving only off of fruits. And you are supposed to stay up until sunrise. Although, these days, especially in western countries, girls stay up until midnight and call it quits.

As for puja's, basic ceremonies, my mother and I typically just bathe all of our Bhagvan idols and pray. Nothing too extravagant. ENJOY!

I am doing the Gauri Vrat this year and have done it for a few years now. Just as a warning i would like to say: After the fast is over it will take you a while to get back to your normal eating habits. Maybe a few days. So do not get worried if you don't eat enough after the fast or if you lost too much weight. You should be able to gain most of it back when the Vrat is over. Also, you can only have one meal day, that is either breakfast, lunch or dinner. I prefer to pick dinner as my one meal.

A suggestable meal would be: Roti with mango ras
Roti with shrikant
Roti with fruits

Bhakri is also acceptable during this fast. I hope this helped!

I Started my gauri Vrat Ate the age 5.......it is pretty easy. You can eat dry fruit, fresh fruits, mango ras,pur or roti. No Thing that includes corn syrup as in ice cream or fruit candy!Make sure you don't stand up when your eating you meal your else you will break the fast. If you have done 5 years of guro....that is called your vrat.If your on your 5th day of vrat you can only eat fruits nothing else....and stay awake all night for the last day.If you want to eat something after 12 a.m. one the last day take a shower and then eat.Do Parvati maa pooja everyday during the fast.
Good Luck
