Shani Jayanthi celebrates the birthday of Lord Shani or Sani. One among the Navagrahas, Shani (Saturn) is dreaded by those people who believe in astrology as it is considered that Sani can create havoc in their life. In 2013, the date of Shani Jayanti is June 8.
In Hinduism, Lord Shani is the son of Surya (Sun God) and his wife Chaya. He is also the god worshipped on Saturday or Shanivar.
Please note that today there are several fake astrologers who take undue advantage of the bad phase in a person’s life. They blame everything on Shani and conduct expensive pujas. Bad phases in materialistic life are natural and the right way to get out of it is by concentrating more on one’s Karma.

Shani yagya or homa is conducted on this day by those people who have the Saturn cycle or Sani cycle or Sade sathi in their horoscope. Many believe that Saturn cycle can be a reason for the bad patch in their life. Pacifying Sani or obtaining Shani shanti is the desired result from such pujas.
In Hinduism, Lord Shani is the son of Surya (Sun God) and his wife Chaya. He is also the god worshipped on Saturday or Shanivar.
It is believed that Hanuman devotees are not affected by the pranks of Shani and therefore many people worship Hanuman on Saturdays.
Visiting Navagraha shrines, Sani temples or temples of Lord Ganesha on the day is considered auspicious. Some people also observe a fast on the day and the method followed is the same as that of Shanivar Vrat.

I personally have a strong feeling that it is absoltely false that Lord Shani only creates havoc in ones life. He is actually a justice doer. If your Karmas are good you are rewarded and if your Karmas are bad you are punished based on the gravity of those Bad Karmas much in the same way as a Judge in our courts assigns different punishments for various offences or crimes committed by a man. The only difference is that the Judges in our courts willingly or unwillingly punish the innocents also but it is not so in the case of the Dharmadhikari Shri Lord Shani.
It is not that only those under the influence of Lord Shani's Sadhesaati should worship Him, but every one on a regular basis should atleast worship him on Saturdays, Shani Trayodashi and Shani jayanti. And more than that follow the following in your daily life. Donot cheat anybody, Donot harm anybody, donot practice untouchability. Help the needy in whatever way you can. For example if you are having food at a road side thela or a hotel and you find a hungry beggar give him or her a small meal from the same thela or hotel. Dont give him the left over food. You can immediately feel the effects of the blessings that he or she showers on you. Never ever commit any mistake to take the curse of a poor for just one curse from a poor or helpless can create more havoc in one's life than that of Lord Shani.
